Caswell Coast
Caswell Coast

A carving in limestone H17cm, W36cm, D16cm. The image has 3 strands of interest. It echoes the experience of swimming in a rough tide and the vivid character of cliffs seen from that position. It records perceived shapes rather than physical reality. The straight-edged segment is how a section of cliff appears although it is one profile of a slow, variegated curve. The 2 curved sections in the centre are the shapes in my imagination that give the feeling of being engulfed by a wave, although the water makes different shapes. The work is also a study of surface in 3D, ranging from straight-edged planes through different curves to an egg shape, a single continuous surface, suggested by the weathered shape of bushes on top of a cliff. There is also an area of natural texture where the stone broke of its own accord.
